A Beautiful Spring

Spring came early this year, after a rather easy winter.  With spring’s arrival, the bachelors in their chosen cliques become even more defined in their territorial behaviours, though this year, thankfully, their aggression among themselves is not as fierce.

The rangeland is rich with things to eat, both here on the home range and down on the range in Tehkummah where our mares live and all the horses are fat from it.  The black flies and mosquitoes are out and this keeps the horses on the move.  There are days though that are cooler and breezy and the torment of biting insects slackens for a time and there is much dozing in the sun.

We are thankful each time spring comes and the grasses return - it is this wonderful habitat here on the island that makes it possible for us to continue to safeguard our wild horses so they can live as much as possible under their own autonomy.

What would you do if someone offered to buy all of your horses for use in a rewilding project?

Hello “Stampeder” -
Many thanks for your comment.
Our answer is “NO”…not all..no…but depending on what if…we might part with some, depending…

Don't worry! I only asked because there's this really cool rewilding project in Alaska!

Well, there's going to be this really cool rewilding project in Alaska in a few years time, as it's still in the planning stages at the moment. They know what they want to do and where they want to do it, it's just a matter of getting all of the permissions needed granted and setting the infrastructure up.

Check them out? https://sites.google.com/alaskafutureecology.org/alaskafutureecologyinstitute/

Just out of curiosity, who do you want to keep for the rest of their lives and who are you willing to let go?

I assume that Altamiro, Bella, Belina, & Zorita have a forever home with you guys. And maybe Interessado & Silvestre as well? Since those two are geldings and all.

Anyone else?

Hello again, Stampeder. Many thanks for the link, for sure I’ll check it out. Your list seems pretty accurate to what we feel. As for the others it is difficult to imagine sending them off…so much depends…hard to think of such things in a loose “what if” way.

What do you think of this?

I’m familiar with this project and hope it is still ongoing - and that maybe the collars could be taken off the mares.

What's wrong with the mares wearing collars? They appear to be properly fitted and will hopefully break off if caught on something.
